(The Center Square) – The summer vacation season usually means higher gas prices, but Georgia drivers are paying 2 cents less at the pump this week, according to AAA.

The average cost for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel is $2.86, 4 cents lower than a month ago and 43 cents less than last year.

“Georgia pump prices keep on giving, which is great news for drivers heading into the summer driving season,” said Montrae Waiters, AAA-The Auto Club Group spokeswoman. “Remember, we’re still at the front end of hurricane season, and a sudden storm could bump up oil prices, causing gas prices to increase.”

Motorists in Savannah have the highest prices at $2.98 on average. The least expensive is in Warner Robins, where a gallon cost $2.75, according to AAA.

Georgia’s gas prices are below the national average of $3.12 but higher than those of all of its neighbors except for Florida, where regular unleaded fuel costs over $3 a gallon.

Tennessee drivers pay the least among the surrounding states at $2.70 with Alabama just 2 cents more at $2.72 a gallon, according to AAA.

Mississippi has the least expensive prices in the country at $2.63. California continues to lead the U.S. in high fuel costs. The average cost is $4.70 a gallon, according to AAA’s fuel price map.
