$1.8 billion in fraud alleged amid 13 defendants

Thirteen Illinois defendants are facing federal charges as part of the largest national healthcare fraud enforcement action in Department of Justice history.

More than 320 defendants were charged nationwide for allegedly participating in various healthcare fraud schemes.

The Illinois defendants are charged with crimes involving more than $1.83 billion billed to government programs and private health insurers.

Economic bellwethers

A financial media company has ranked Illinois’ “signal cities” for economic shifts.

MarketBeat surveyed more than 3,000 business leaders and determined that Rockford, Peoria and Carbondale are the state’s top economic bellwethers.

The report said local shifts in hiring, consumer behavior, or supply chains often ripple from those cities across the entire state.

AG settles with staffing agency

An Illinois staffing company will be required to pay $1 million to compensate temporary workers over a no-poaching and wage-fixing deal.

Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul announced the settlement with Midway Staffing Inc.

The company was the last remaining defendant in a lawsuit Raoul’s office filed against three staffing agencies and their client.
