In a span of only 50 days, President Trump has done more than any of his modern predecessors to hollow out the foundations of an international system that the United States painstakingly erected in the 80 years since it emerged victorious from World War II.Without formally declaring a reversal of course or offering a strategic rationale, he has pushed the United States to switch sides in the Ukraine war, abandoning all talk about helping a nascent, flawed democracy defend its borders against a larger invader. He did not hesitate when he ordered the United States to vote with Russia and…

Sen. Richard Durbin, D-Ill., and three other leading Democrats in Congress wrote in a letter to the White House on Tuesday that President Donald Trump’s Inauguration Day proclamation declaring that illegal immigration is an invasion of the U.S. is a “troubling and misguided interpretation of the Constitution,” which could be a precursor to legal action if Trump goes further. The congressional Democrats who signed the letter — Sens. Durbin and Alex Padilla, along with Reps. Jamie Raskin and Pramila Jayapal — were joined in it by the American Civil Liberties Union and the Brennan Center, a liberal law and democracy think tank.  “Since you came into office, you have attempted to expand the scope of presidential power beyond that which is permitted…

It used to be common knowledge — not just among policymakers and economists but also high school students with a grasp of history — that tariffs are a terrible idea. The phrase “beggar thy neighbor” meant something to regular people, as did the names of Senator Reed Smoot and Representative Willis Hawley. Thirteen successive presidents all but vowed never to repeat those mistakes.Until Donald Trump. Until him, no U.S. president has been so ignorant…
