Library protest results in one arrest
Dozens of people protested outside a public library in Chicago as a Pride Month event was taking place Monday. The event was story time with a drag queen. Supporters also showed up and used pride flags to shield the families entering the library. The library promoted the event as a special story time with books, music and a guest drag performer. Chicago police say one person was arrested at the protest.
DePaul disbands Planned Parenthood group
The Planned Parenthood Generation Action chapter at DePaul University has been told that the group would be disbanded and must cease all operations due to an affiliation with Planned Parenthood as an abortion provider. School officials did not cite any school policies or procedures the group broke. The group formed in 2022 with faculty support and had been active on campus providing sexual health information, resources and events.
Chicago speed cameras collect $91 million
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson pledged during his mayoral campaign that he would phase out the city’s automated speed cameras. Now there’s word that he is adding 50 more speed cameras around the city. According to an analysis by the Illinois Policy Institute, motorists were fined nearly $91 million in 2024 from 1.8 million speed camera tickets. One alderman said the fact that Johnson is adding more cameras to the fleet makes it obvious that it is just a revenue grab.
